Quick Thoughts

Any opportunity to earn 100,000 Ultimate Rewards is a welcome sight, although the increased spend requirement will be harder for some people to reach. The old welcome offer was 80,000 Ultimate Rewards on only $5,000 of spend, so this new offer gives you an extra 20,000 points but requires an extra $10,000 in spend.

In theory that means your final $10,000 of spend is earning an extra 2x which is still pretty good, especially if it’s being spent in any of the 3x categories:

  • Travel
  • Shipping purchases
  • Internet, cable and phone services
  • Advertising purchases with social media sites and search engines

Having said that, Doctor of Credit notes that the old welcome offer of 80,000 Ultimate Rewards on $5,000 of spend is still available via referral link, with the person giving the referral earning 20,000 Ultimate Rewards if the application is approved. If you’re being referred by someone else in your household, you’d be earning a combined amount of 100,000 Ultimate Rewards without having to spend an extra $10,000.

Seeing as this 100k/$15k welcome offer is the new standard offer, it’s not clear how long referral links for the old offer will be available. If you’re interested in the lower spend requirement of the old offer, it might be best to get a referral link now in case that changes in the coming days.

However, if you wouldn’t have any problem knocking out $15,000 of spend in three months and have someone in your household that already has an Ink card, it might be better to wait to see if the referral offer changes in the coming days or weeks. If the referral offer changes to this 100k/$15k offer, you could earn 100,000 Ultimate Rewards while your family member could pick up 20,000 Ultimate Rewards for referring you.

Note that although this card is subject to Chase’s 5/24 rule in terms of obtaining it, you won’t be adding to your 5/24 count if you’re approved for it due to the Chase Ink Business Preferred card being a business card rather than a personal card.

Chase 5/24 semantics (“Subject to” vs. “Count towards”): Most Chase cards are subject to the 5/24 rule. That means the rule is enforced in making approval decisions. In other words, you probably won’t get approved if your credit report shows that you opened 5 or more cards in the past 24 months. Meanwhile, most business cards (such as those from Chase, Amex, Barclaycard, BOA, Citi, US Bank, and Wells Fargo) are not reported on your personal credit report. These cards do not count towards 5/24.

Example: Chase Ink Business Preferred is subject to 5/24, so you likely won’t get approved if over 5/24. If you do get approved, it won’t count towards 5/24 since it won’t appear as an account on your credit report.
