Kind of a Big Deal

A reminder there’s free points at Office Max/Depot today with a possible negative cost Visa gift card (VGC) promotion.

The promotion is pretty standard:  get $10 off (instantly at checkout) $300 (or more) worth of Visa Everywhere branded (debit) gift cards purchased.  It’s not as good as the previous $15 off instant rebate from Office Max/Depot but still a great way to earn free (or nearly free) points.

Don’t forget to use the best card that earns 5x for office supply purchases such as the Chase Ink Plus, Ink Cash, Ink Bold, or Amex Simply Cash Business cards.   The regular $200 VGCs that Office Depot sells are $6.95 and $100 cards cost $5.95.  However, Dining, and Style Everywhere cards are only $4.95. Generally buying 2 x $200 Visa gift cards is best.  The optimal math works like this:

2 x $200 VGCs that cost $4.95 each = $9.90

Total Cost = $400 + $9.90 = $409.90

Instant Rebate:  – $10

Income +$0.10

Total points earned = 5 x 409.90 = 2,050

Using regular $200 and $100 cards won’t net a profit on the deal, but the cost per point is still small compared to the rewards earned.  Promotion suggests a limit one offer per customer.  Instant rebate at in store at checkout for Visa gift cards only.
